Have you ever paid for a beauty service and the end result turned out to be light years away from what you wanted and expected it to be? This had been my experience with hair color, ever since I moved to NYC until I met Brianna Noelle – my “fairy hair mother” – at Original & Mineral NYC.
Let’s rewind to fall 2014. I wanted to be a platinum blonde. I wanted someone to turn my dark, thick Puerto Rican hair into a gorgeous platinum blonde mane, Khaleesi-style. The result? I still cringe at the site of this photo.
I had done my research and due diligence, I thought I had found the perfect salon in NYC to turn my platinum blonde dreams into reality! As you can imagine, I ended up with hair trauma, taking me two full years to grow out and bring my hair back to a natural healthy state. Now, let’s fast-forward to present day miracles.
I Found a “Fairy Hair Mother” at O&M NYC
Two years, no color, only intense hair hydration and moisturizing treatments, taking Biotin twice a day, pumpkin seed oil, prenatal gummies (apparently they help grow your hair out too), I had been craving a change but I was terrified of getting my hair colored again.
Skeptical and going back and forth between severe bad platinum hair flashbacks and wishful thinking, I managed to make my way to the Original & Mineral salon in Chelsea. I was introduced to Brianna Noelle and a few minutes in, she sat next to me and listened to my hair rants as if we were in therapy. In all honesty, I needed to vent.
Brianna is some kind of special soul, she was knowledgeable and patient. She heard me out and gave me her take on hair coloring – or hair painting, I should say. The techniques at O&M are different, but before taking a deeper dive into the brand, I want to talk to you about what makes a solid hairstylist.
For Brianna, the inspiration to become a hairstylist came quite organically. “Pretty early I fell in love with the idea of creating, socializing and helping show people how beautiful they really are, all while earning a living and being fulfilled at the end of each day.” Her favorite part about painting hair is how the technique allows her to be meticulous yet free in her application, enabling her to design custom natural hair looks from client to client.
And now, let me give you the full scoop behind my hair journey and transformation at Original & Mineral NYC.
My Hair Journey with O&M
After our initial consultation, Brianna realized I was pretty much suffering from a serious case of Hair PTSD. Guys, this is a real thing. The best thing about our initial consultation was knowing how Brianna focused her career on clean and organic haircare and fully understood how maintaining the integrity of my hair was my biggest priority.
Brianna’s belief in hair sustainability allowed her to create a realistic hair plan for me. Getting down to an understanding of my desired look, a sun-kissed and natural play off light on my dark Latina locks, Brianna was set to achieve a full head of statement hair fit for my everyday needs. As such, a session of Hair Painting with O&M paint powder was the answer!
By using a gentle painting powder and developer, Brianna began sectioning my hair from the bottom, working her way up, and painting lightener where she knew I wanted to see more brightness. This softer, lacing technique trickled down the lightening effect to a more saturated bottom half of my hair. After about an hour of processing, I was ready to be rinsed, just in time for my very first O&M Hair Facial!
O&M Hair Facial and After Process
For the ultimate cleanse, Brianna used the O&M Original Detox Shampoo & Conditioner to wash away the paint powder and remove any remaining deposits. We all know the continuous use of styling products and the natural buildup of oils can leave our hair looking dull on top. Easy fix? The Original Detox products with Australian River Mint to deeply cleanse the scalp without stripping it of essential oils. Did I mention the tingly cooling effect it leaves you with? Yes, blame it on the Peppermint Oil leaves. I loved it.
After my initial consultation, I also explained to Brianna I wanted to keep a warmer tone, without it becoming brassy or acquiring an orange hue. Brianna listened and gave me a Liquid CCT Color (clean color technology) treatment. Of course, she went with cool velvet blonde tones and this part of the process took around 15 minutes. Let me explain, O&M’s Liquid CCT Colors enhance your natural color, add tone depth, and are perfect for color correction work. They leave the hair incredibly glossy and are 100% ammonia free! Yay!
Brianna finished my O&M hair facial with the Hydrate & Conquer Shampoo and Conditioner to help seal the process and lock in moisture, letting me sit for 5 minutes with a Hot Essential Oil towel before rinse. The Hydrate & Conquer system gives dry, damaged, or colored hair some serious TLC with nutrient-rich Tasmanian Sea Kelp, vitamins A, B, C & E, and 13 amino acids to strengthen hair and stimulate growth.
Brianna gave my ends a much-needed trim and looked to achieve a bouncy and beachy hair texture when styling my hair, to better show my sun kissed colored locks. She layered my hair with Know Knot Detangling Spray to reinforce moisture while taking some of the excess water out with the blow-dryer. She used the Atonic Thickening Spritz for an extra BAM! of volume and shine, which wouldn’t weigh down my hair, and sealed it with the Style Guru Styling Cream for a smooth and soft foundation.
Maintenance Going Forward
To keep my hair looking shiny and oh-so beachy, Brianna recommends the following:
- Wash 2 to 3 times a week utilizing the hair facial system, as mentioned above.
- Coming to salon in-between 6 to 8-week painting touch up for a maintenance gloss to nourish the hair and keep the tone where we want them to be.
“My number one tip on maintaining painted hair would be HYDRATION. Making sure the hair is being nurtured with leave in conditioner (O&M Know Knot, Hydrate and Conquer Shampoo and Conditioner), less hot tool work, and depending on the level of lightness a once-a-week wash with O&M Conquer Blonde Shampoo to tone out any unwanted brassy hues.”
What have I taken from all of this? Well, color treated healthy hair is an achievable thing. Healthy hair begins when it’s free from stress and when we manage to reduce the chemical overload on it. The most badass fact about the O&M products is how they challenge the artificial norms of professional haircare with their highly effective and gentle formulations by removing harsh chemicals wherever possible.
