Throughout my tenure as a blogger, I’ve had the opportunity to meet a sizeable number of truly passionate, incredibly creative and hardworking women, all which at some point or another have mentioned their interest in owning their own profitable business. I hear you girls, I hear you. As such, and for the past few months, I’ve been doing research on women with an entrepreneurial mindset, who’ve had the courage to put themselves and their talents “out there” and have made their dreams a reality by taking the plunge and opening their own businesses.
From my perspective of a young professional woman who’s always had a 9-to-6, while at the same time juggling an endless amount of side-hustles, the idea of having my own business can be a bit daunting. As I see it (and I know several of you do as well), having a 9-to-6 provides a sense of economic stability which can be difficult to attain right off the bat. Certain people save money for a period of time and quit their day jobs when they feel they have a comfortable cushion to dive into their businesses while using their savings to sustain themselves during the initial "pioneering stage" period. Others trade their 9-to-6 for a part-time gig or begin to freelance, which in turn gives them the flexibility and economic stability needed to push their businesses forward.
All in all, there are various ways to go about it, but in today’s post I want to talk about how a particular woman followed her dreams and started her own handcrafted crochet wear business, which is incredibly successful and she is working really, really hard to continue to make things happen for herself. Meet Valentina Escamilla, the owner and founder of Favorite Little Corner (FLC).
First and foremost, the lavender top which I’m wearing in this blog post is called the Bohemian Crochet Halter "Kaya", designed and created by Valentina. Talk about skills! She began FLC as a way to explore more of herself and her talents and when I stumbled upon her Instagram, I couldn’t help but to reach out to her to talk more about her handmade crocheting business. Before diving deeper into our Q&A, one of the things I wish to highlight about Valentina is how supportive she is of other small business owners. FLC sells on Etsy and Valentina takes great pride in supporting other Etsy sellers by buying all of her shipping materials from other Etsy shops. Res-pect. Now, without further ado, let’s talk about Valentina and Favorite Little Corner.
Q1: Tell us about yourself. Who is Valentina Escamilla?
Valentina very passionately describes herself as a crafter, a lover of creativity and nature. She finds a lot of satisfaction in creating; it fills her soul with strength and encouragement. Nature plays a huge part of her life, as her main source of inspiration.
Q2: At what point in your life did you begin to play around with the idea of opening your own business?
It all happened last year (2015). Valentina learned how to crochet at the age of 12 and she left the whole crafting scene for a little while but is back at it and more enthused than ever!
Q3: What were you up to before launching Favorite Little Corner and what motivated you to start your handmade crochet wear business?
Valentina was working for a talent agency before launching FLC. Realizing how at ease and inspired she felt when she was creating motivated her to start her own handcrafting business. She felt she had found a new outlet for stress and anxiety relief and wholeheartedly decided to pursue it.
Q4: For how long have you had this business and how would you describe its growth over time?
Valentina began with FLC as a hobby, back in 2015. She slowly incorporated more time and effort into her side passion project and it wasn’t until the end of last year she decided to dedicate more time to it. Ever since her handmade crochet wear business has taken off and she truly, truly loves it.
Q5. Where would you eventually want to take Favorite Little Corner? Any long-term goals you are currently working on?
Valentina has recently started adding patterns and kits to her store, as she would love to turn FLC into a vessel for others to create and feel inspired as well. Crocheting was a great outlet for her to get through a very rough period of anxiety in her life and it has given her a lot of joy and understanding around the realm of social media. She would love and is interested in sharing her knowledge and experiences with others.
Q6: As an entrepreneur, what would be the best advice you could give to someone who is interested in branching out and creating a business of their own in the upcoming future?
“There’s a lot of work that goes into it. A lot of unpaid hours but every day is an opportunity to make progress and as small as you think, the progress is happening. Don’t give up if you are truly passionate about it, success is measured differently for other people; just daring to try is a huge accomplishment. Also, surround yourself with people who support and offer you help, this comes as a blessing in those days when you are full of doubts.”
